Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)


Definition

Athlete’s Foot or Tinea Pedis is a common superficial fungal infection of the skin in feet. It usually occurs on the soles of the foot or in between the toes.

Symptoms

  • Dryness of the skin
  • Itching and or burning sensation
  • Redness of the skin

There may be scaling and peeling of the skin and in more severe cases there may be cracking of the skin on the sole or top of the foot.


Causes

Athlete's Foot or Tiena Pedis is most commonly caused by dermatophytes (fungus parasatic) .These organisms grow in the superficial layers of the skin and nails.


Who can get Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis) ?

Anyone can contract Athlete's Foot.

  • People who have a compromised immune system due to conditions such as diabetes, HIV
  • People who are older are more susceptible
  • Men generally are more susceptible compared to

How can one contract Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)?

Athlete's Foot occurs in warm and/or moist environtments. The below may act as a catalyst for breeding Athlete's Foot.

  • Inappropriate personal hygiene
  • Leaving skin wet/moist
  • Tight, occlusive (closed) footwear

Risks

  • Athlete's Foot if not treated may spread to different parts of the body (nails, groin, body skin etc) and to other people
  • Could cause smelly feet
  • For people who have a compromised immune system due to conditions such as diabetes, HIV, there may be complications if Athlete's Foot is not treated promptly

Prevention

  • Wear footwear in communal places (Swimming pools, Gymnasisums, Lockers etc)
  • Dry your feet thoroughly and in between the toes
  • Change socks daily or even twice daily in case of excessive sweating
  • Wear socks made of natural fibre (cotton, wool)
  • Wash / ventilate shoes

Treatment

  • Topical antifungal creams and ointments
  • Antifungal powders in shoes and/or socks
  • Methylated spirit in between toes in case of excessive sweating
